“There
is a long, long trail a-winding………..”
There are times when, as a group of us as BDFAS members carry on with
our task of completing a record of our Church of St. Nicolas, we feel
this could well be the most appropriate sentiment to sum up our continuing
efforts.
The work is however, progressing well and we are I believe at last getting
to the point where “silver linings” and “dreams”
can perhaps also come into our thoughts.
You may recall that some three years ago we undertook, as part of a nationwide
NADFAS initiative, to compile a detailed record of everything which is
in the Church- from memorials to stonework, paintings to windows, textiles
to woodwork-even down to listing items under a miscellaneous category.
This is a time consuming and meticulous task where accuracy is of the
essence. Having completed the descriptive work we then put together the
background and history of each item. I am pleased to report that we can
now realistically see a finishing point for the first part of our assignment
and are beginning to work consistently on the second. Even then there
will still be more to do-putting our work into an agreed format and including
plans and photographs. The NADFAS Area colleagues will then check our
draft before it can be printed in final form.
We are very fortunate that in Bookham we have a dedicated and still (most
of the time!) enthusiastic band of 20 or so Members who are working on
the completion of this worthwhile and lasting record of St. Nicolas, a
precious part our local heritage.
